• A Eurail Pass is the most cost-effective method of traveling around Europe. Various packages are available depending how long you want to stay and the number of countries you are interested in visiting; and any of the options are cheaper than buying each ticket when you are in Europe. Also, keep in mind that in addition to the ticket price, you are required to pay for a seat reservation—that applies to the Pass as well.

EasyJet and Ryan Air are your friends for cheap air travel within the EU. They are both discount airlines that provide decent prices, even at the last minute. Air travel can be less expensive as well if you don’t have a Eurail pass. It charges for checked bags (weight can’t exceed 40 kgs.) and you are only allowed one carry-on.

• Travel Web sites can be infinitely helpful when planning any trip, especially for women traveling alone in a foreign country. A few of my favorites are: Journeywoman, Tango Diva and WAYN.

• Earplugs are your friend. Use them on the plane, train and especially in European hotels, many of which are considerably less sound-proofed than those in the States.

• This isn’t rocket science, but I have to say it anyway: Avoid Europe in the summer at all costs. Not only is it overrun with screaming, drunk University students from everywhere, it’s overrun with tourists, period. And lines are longer everywhere, especially for le toilette. And, depending on where you go, it can be brutally hot (e.g., Sicily). If you are a reptile, you might like that kind of scorching heat; but for those who prefer more temperate climates, wait until fall or spring.
